Mary & David’s Severn Valley Railway Wedding

by Daniel James, Kidderminster Wedding Photographer

As a nearby Kidderminster wedding photographer days like this are why I do what I do. Whilst some weddings follow a script. Mary and David threw the script out of the window. And honestly? It was one of my favourite days I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing.

A Church, A Minibus & A Whole Lot of Pink

The day began at St Thomas Church in Stourbridge which is a beautiful, classic setting that felt almost deliberately at odds with what Mary had planned for everything else. Because Mary, you see, is crazy about pink. Not quietly, subtly pink. Gloriously, unapologetically pink. The wedding dress was pink. The flamingos perched on the wedding cake were pink. Even the bouquet had a personality of its own with feathers bright feathers aplenty, and if you looked closely at the buttonholes, you’d spot tiny disco mirror balls catching the light with every step.
Once the ceremony was done, the whole party piled onto a vintage minibus, exactly the kind of transport this wedding deserved and headed for their next destination in Kidderminster.

All Aboard: Severn Valley Railway, Kidderminster

If you’re planning a Severn Valley Railway wedding, let me tell you this location is something else entirely. There’s a romance to the beautiful traditional Kidderminster station that’s hard to put into words; steam, polish, the smell of history, and the sound of a locomotive. Mary and David had booked a private carriage, and the attention to detail inside was stunning. The table centrepieces were handmade miniature trains a perfect nod to the setting, and the kind of personal touch that tells you everything about the couple.

Bridgnorth: Coal, Cake & Footplate Glory

The journey along the Severn Valley line to Bridgnorth was pure magic with rolling countryside, steam billowing past the windows, and a couple completely lost in the joy of the day. At Bridgnorth, with a magnificent locomotive as the backdrop, Mary and David cut the cake. Then David rolled up his sleeves and had a go at shovelling coal for the locomotive. Lots of fun and an extra special moment for David.

A Dance Nobody Planned (The Best Kind)

Back at Kidderminster station, something completely unscripted happened. In the middle of the platform, Mary and David just started dancing. No cue, no signal, just the two of them with the music of the station guiding their feet, completely in their own world. It’s the kind of moment you can’t manufacture and you absolutely cannot miss.

Home to party

The final stop of the day was back at their house, where David carried Mary over the threshold. Then after a few more photos I left them to it to enjoy the final hours of this unforgettable day.
